"Given that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had chosen to do away with the bulletproof glass on the podium, the rooftop arrangements on all directions were bolstered for Friday's Independence Day function at the Red Fort.
Sharpshooters of National Security Guards and spotters were deployed on all the high-rises in the vicinity of the Red Fort after the buildings were thoroughly sanitized. As many as 360 buildings near the Red Fort had policemen stationed. Aided with binoculars to keep a close eye on any suspicious movements, the snipers had instructions to shoot anyone who entered within a three kilometer radius of the cordoned-off area.
This was also for the first time that the area within eight kilometers of the Red Fort was put under surveillance.
At the Red Fort itself, two high-resolution cameras with zoom features allowing them to magnify an object the size of an insect had been placed on the towers on either side of the Prime Minister's podium. The cameras had been taken on rent by the Delhi Police and were shipped from Mumbai.
This was aided by a network of CCTV cameras set up on the venue as well as the routes on which the PM was to travel.
Several temporary police posts had also been set up around the area where policemen were stationed with medium machine guns and light machine guns. A central control room to monitor the situation was up at the Red Fort while aerial patrolling and an air defense mechanism were also put in place.
According to sources, over 20,000 security personnel from the Delhi Police as well as Central Police Organisations were deployed.
Extra personnel were also deployed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport as well as the various metro stations.
All the borders were sealed, entry of commercial vehicles was restricted and private vehicles entering the city were thoroughly checked. Parking remained a problem at the venue as many with valid parking stickers issued by the Ministry of Defense were not allowed to park their vehicles. The police said it was because the drivers of those vehicles did not have an invitation card."
