NAVA DURGA – 9 FORMS OF SAKTHI
1) SHAILAPUTRI - She is the first form of Durga. Worshiped on first day of Navratri. She is the daughter of Himmavan. She mounts a bull, holds a trident and lotus in her hands. She bestows marital harmony and conjugal bliss on her devotees
2) BRAHMACCHAARINI - Common Names are Uma, Aparna, Tapashcharini. She is the 2nd form of Durga. As Aparna she underwent more severe tapas to hold the hands of Lord Shiva. She is majestic, effulgent and personification of love and loyalty. She holds rosary in one hand and Kamandalu in the other. She also epitomes Knowledge and wisdom. She inculcates penance, rounciation, dispassion, ethical conduct and restrain to devotees. She is the presiding Goddess in Swadishtana Chakra
3) CHANDRAGHANTA - Chandra (Moon) + Ghanta (Bell). She gives Supreme Bliss and Knowledge. Third night of Navratri is dedicated to Her. She bears Crescent moon on her forehead. She manifests with 10 arms and 3 eyes. She is ever ready to go for war and exudes an aggressive posture. She rides the tiger and wears a garland of bells. She bestows peace and ultimate good to devotees. She is worshiped in Tamil Nadu. She resides in the Manipura Chakra.
4) KUSHMANDA - Ku - little + usma - warmth + anda - universe or the cosmic energy. She is the 4th form. She is like glowing sun with 8 arms. So known as "Ashtabhuja". She holds Kamandalu, bow, arrow, lotus, jar of nectar, discus and mace. In eighth hands She holds the rosary that is capable of giving eight siddhis and nine nidhis. She rides tiger and rushes to devotees to bestow name, fame, longevity and health. Her abode is Bhimaparvat.
5) SKANDAMATA- Mother of Karthikeyan (known as Murugan in Tamil Nadu). She is the 5th form. She has 3 eyes and 4 arms. She is the commander of Deva Army in war against Asuras or Rakshasaas. Two hands holds lotuses while the other two hands display the defending and granting of moons mudras. She rides the lion.
6) KATYAAYANI - She is the daughter of Sage Katyayana. She is worshiped as Goddess who killed Mahishasuran. She holds lotus in left hand and a weapon in her left lower hand. Two other hands show the abhaya and varada gestures.
7) KALARAATRI - Also known as Shubamkaari. She is the 7th form worshiped on 7th night. She is the enemy of ignorance. Her two left hands hold the torch and the cleaver. Right hands are ever ready to protect and bestow boons for devotees. She has 3 eyes. Flames appear from her nostrils. She killed the demon Rakthabheejan. Her mount is donkey. Despite her fiery looks, she bestows calmness and courage to her devotees.
MAHAGAURI - A little girl of eight, eighth form of Durga. She has the fairest complexion as a moon, conch and jasmine. Her clothes and ornaments are also in white. She also has 3 eyes and 4 arms. Two hands indicating abhaya and varada mudras and two hands holding the trident and tambourine. She rides bull.
9) SIDDHIDATRI - She is worshipped on last day. She is the last form. She holds the chakra in her right hand and a mace in upper hand. In left lower hand she holds the conch and in the upper hand a lotus flower. She bestows 8siddhis - anima, mahima, garima, laghima, prapti, prakamya, lishitva and vashitva. It is believed Lord Shiva got his 8 siddhis by worshiping Maa Siddhidatri. She grants all kind of occult powers and 26 different wishes to her devotees.
