The lamp has its own special place in Sanatan Vaidik Hindu Dharma. It is a form and a symbol of Tēj (Absolute fire principle). The lamp is invoked as, 'तमसो मा ज्योSतिर्गमय ।' meaning the lamp leads us from darkness towards light. It burns only to give the message of peace and light to man. That is its greatness. The following mantra which is recited during the ritual of puja explains its significance.
भोदीपब्रह्मरूपस्वंnt ज्योiतिषांप्रभुरव्यpय: ।।
आरोग्यंूदेहिपुत्रांश्चवमत:शांतिं प्रयच्छमे ।।
Meaning: O Deity of lamp, you are of the form of Bramhan (the absolute truth). You are full of radiance. You never wither. Please bestow me health and good progeny and please fulfill my wishes.
In every ritual or worship the aim is to seek the grace of the divine principle of God that is worshipped in that ritual as well as to generate and imbibe a maximum amount of the subtle basic sattva component. If the components used in the ritual or worship are of subtle basic sattva predominance, then there is higher ability to attract the divine principle of God and thus His grace.
Suppose we were to use clarified butter (ghee) as the fuel for the lamp, then Clarified butter has a predominance of the sattva component in it and hence the flame generated by burning it emits sattvik frequencies. Due to the predominance of sattva component in the flame, it attracts and emits divine consciousness and one gets the experience of purity in the environment. Along with it there are frequencies of Bliss that are generated and give one the experience of divine presence.
Suppose we were to use sesame seed oil as the fuel for the lamp, then the frequencies emitted would have been a combination of sattva and raja frequencies. If one were to have a highly activated sixth sense (ESP) they would be able to see the following picture
Thus if the ritual or worship calls for offering a lamp, then it would be to our best spiritual benefit if we offer a lamp fuelled by clarified butter instead of any other fuel.
The options for the fuel used in descending order of merit would be
1. Clarified butter (Ghee)
2. Sesame oil
3. Peanut oil
4. Candle
