Nama Sankeerthana Mahima narrated by Sri Sri Anna:

Story of Nama Mahimai
Nama Sankeerthana Mahima narrated by Sri Sri Anna:

A Bhagavathar named Sparsakal Bhagavathar was a contemporary of Namadevar. In fact they both belonged to the same street and lived and studied together. Sparsakal bhagavathar got his name initially not because he was like a touch stone, who could convert anyone into a noble or holy person. In the beginning both Namadevar and Sparsakal Bhagavathar participated in all nama sankeerthanams and bhajans in Pandaripuram together in the Ranga Sila (the mandapam) in front of the Mahayogapeedam of Pandurangan, which is famous for bhajans by all time greats. However, Sparsakal Bhagavathar always had a feeling that Vittalan was keeping them in low profile and starvation and the luxury, pomp and glory could not be accomplished by singing His praise. Slowly he turned towards Lakshmi Pooja (or Kubera Pooja) and with his dedicated upasana got hold of a sparsakal (touch stone – this touch stone will convert all iron pieces into gold merely by the touch or sparsam – hence the name). He cautiously used this sparsakal and changed the nails, nuts and bolts in house into gold. He successfully and prudently started changing all the iron in house and later went around the streets in search of nails and needles and iron pieces. He amassed huge wealth, built a palatial house and covered his wife with gold ornaments (in fact Anna said he made a gold kavacham for his wife). In the process of changing iron into gold, Sparsakal Bhagavathar turned himself into rusted iron. Net result was that Sparsakal Bhagavathar absented himself for the bhajans and not to be seen in the Ranga Sila for the last three months. Namadevar watched the peculiar behaviour of Sparsakal Bhagavathar and wanted to solve his problem. In the mean time, Rajayee and Sparsakal Bhagavathar' s wife meet regularly in the mornings when they went together for drawing water from the Chandrabagha river. Rajayee wondered at the sudden change in the lifestyle of her friend and enquired the reasons (rather innocently). Sparsakal Bhagavathar' s wife who was longing for this query instantly replied that her wealth was made possible by her husband, who stopped worshipping Pandurangan and turned towards Lakshmi Kubera Pooja. His upasana earned him a sparsakal, which turns every piece of iron into gold. Further she said in a hush voice that the sparsakal was kept in the salagramam box and he regularly performed pooja for the sparsakal. Emboldened by her poverty and as the law of nature had it, women yield to temptation Rajayee asked Sparsakal Bhagavathar' s wife to spare the sparsakal for a day so that she can ward off her poverty too. Sparsakal Bhagavathar' s wife hesitantly agreed to give the sparsakal on a condition to keep the matter confidential. Rajayee accepted and took home the sparsakal. She used the sparsakal and changed a few needles and nails into gold. This was enough for her to get some wealth to buy new dresses for her children and food grains for her family.Namadevar noticed this slight change in his home and enquired about the details. Promptly Rajayee told him the Sparsakal Bhagavathar' s episode. Namadevar was shocked and annoyed at the incidence. He was rather upset to know that this sparsakal has corrupted not only Rajayee but initially Sparsakal Bhagavathar and prevented him from attending the bhajans. Hurriedly he took the sparsakal and threw it in the Chandrabagha river. Rajayee was dumb-founded and could not come out of her house to meet Sparsakal Bhagavathar' s wife. The next day morning Sparsakal Bhagavathar prepared himself for the pooja and searched for the salagramam box (in which he kept the sparsakal). His wife confessed her fault and on hearing this Sparsakal Bhagavathar shouted in fury. He briskly walked to Namadevar's house and demanded for the sparsakal. Namadevar coolly said that he threw the sparsakal into the river and advised Sparsakal Bhagavathar to forget the incident and attend the bhajan from now on. Sparsakal Bhagavathar did not yield to Namadevar's request and in turn scolded him and Pandurangan for his state of affairs. Finally Namadevar took Sparsakal Bhagavathar by his hand and went to the River Chandrabagha. He took a dip in the river and gathered handful of stones from the river. All the stones turned into sparsakal and he handed them over to Sparsakal Bhagavathar. On seeing this miracle Sparsakal Bhagavathar realized his fault and the mahathmiyam of Namadevar. He fell at his feet and said that by this act Namadevar has shown him the right path and now he will never leave the lotus feet of Vittalan and Namadevar. Pleased by this change, Namadevar hug Sparsakal Bhagavathar and claimed that only now he has become a sparsakal. Here Shri Shri Anna compared Namadevar with Mahaprabhu, who by his mere touch made everyone chant the Mahamanthra
