To whomsoever it may apply.
!7. One should ascertain by inquiry from elders and or Purohita as to under which sutra he is going to perform a particular ritual. A few sages like Apasthambha, AsvalAyana, BodhAyana,Gautama, ParAshara etc. etc. have given us sutras for performing various rituals. There are some differences between these sutras. A kartA should follow the same sutra-s which his elders have been following.
18. Even at the cost of repetition, pitr kAryam/tarpanam should be performed with the utmost sincerity and piety. Both internal and external purity of the kartA is a must. One should follow family traditions and practices in the matter of vastra madi etc. Some people perform tarpanam wearing wet clothes. This is prohibited. But if the family has been following this tradition for generations, it becomes a kula Achara. Performing tarpanam on the banks of sacred rivers in the course of punya tirtha snAnam with wet clothes(not dripping with water) is considered as permissible by many.
19.Pitr Tarpanam is required to be performed after doingMadhyAnhikam. While performing mAdhyAnhikam, one has to apply vibhuti (sacred ash) or other marks on the forehead. But while performing pitr tarpanam, the vibhuti etc. has to erased with water. In some families, people perform pitr tarpanam without removing the marks on the forehead as mentioned above. In such matters one should follow the family practice or the advice of a sishta BrAhmana.
20. Whether the pitrs both on father`s side and on mother`s side will be invoked in a single koorcham or on two different koorchams is to be ascertained from surviving elders and followed accordingly. Some people spread thedharbha grass and invoke the pitrs on them. In such matters, one should do what his elders in the family were doing.
21. No pitr tarpanam is required to be performed till expiry of one year from the death of one`s father. BUT if an eclipse occurs before expiry of one year, tarpanam must be done during grahana punyakAlam and thereafter on every AmAvAsyA tithi, pitr tarpanam must be performed.
22. Even if amounts to repetition, tarpanam should be performed in the afternoon after performing snAnam and mAdhyAnhikam. Till then the kartA must observe fasting.
