Karadaiyan nonbu
Dear fellow-Iyers
Our thanks are due to Sri Hari-Krishnamurthy for relaying what Sri P R Ramachander wrote about Kaaradaiyar Nonbu, or Saavithri Vrutham, which is celebrated annually with due solemnity by many Palakkad Brahmana families, including mine.
As usual, our doughty PPR slips quite glaringly when trying to translate Samskrutham manthrams. Even more so when he tries to assign the proper place and origin of those sacred slokams and who is qualified to recite them.
For example, he loftily writes:-
"Pasyema Saradha : Satham , JeeeEma Saradha: Satham ,
Nandhama Saradha: Satham , Modhama Saradha: Satham ,
May you both see hundred autumns , May you both live for hundred autumns,Nandhama Saradha: Satham , Modhama Saradha: Satham ,
May you be both be happy for hundred autumns, May you both enjoy the bliss for hundred autum"
These words have nothing to do with Kaaradaiyar Nonbu, and never had. They certainly are NOT for chanting by women - virgins, married, widowed, or not.
They are for chanting only by those qualified males who have had proper Upanayanam done according to the prescribed rules, by the prescribed persons, and within the prescribed time.
The misquoted and truncated slokam occurs in the soorya darshana-manthram of our Maadhyaahnika gaayathri-japa sampoorna karmam. The full version, instructed during his Upanayanam, as every properly initiated Brahmachaari should know, is:-
"pashyEma sharadash-shadam, jeevEma sharadash-shadam, nandaama sharadash-shadam, modaama sharadash-shadam, bhavaama sharadash-shadam, shrunavaama sharadash-shadam, prabravaama sharadash-shadam, ajeethaasyaama sharadash-shadam. jyOkcha sooryam drushE."
Meaning: Let all of us duly initiated Braahmanas who are vowed to salute the Sun thrice daily with chanting of the mahaa-gaayathri manthram, and who have already performed the pre-requisite rituals of offering arkhyam and of offering libations of tharppanam to the aadithyaadi navagrahams and to the keshaavadi vishnu-svaroopams:
(1) together view for a hundred more years (autumns) the glorious celestial Sun which rises in the East amidst sanctity;
(2) together live thus for a hundred more years through the blessing of the same beneficent Sun;
(3) together have affluence, wealth and prosperity for a hundred more years;
(4) together have joy, happiness and pleasure for a hundred more years, sharing them with those near and dear to us;
(5) together excel in our avowed vocation and exist in peace and harmony for a hundred more years;
(6) together listen to the chanting of sacred sounds for a hundred more years;
(7) together live in this manner for a hundred more years without being overcome by the elements of evil.

This is a very important festival observed by Ladies of Tamil Nadu on the day when masi(kumbham) ends and Panguni (meenam ) begins. This pooja is observed to commemorate the day when SAthi Savithri went after Yama the God of death to get back the soul of her husband Sathyavan and is observed by ladies for granting a longer life span to her husband. (or future husband)
This year The Nombu falls on March 14th .Most of the Panchangams on line and those available with me indicate that the new month begins at around 11.18 Am. Some panchangams have suggested that the proper Muhurtha to observe the offering of Adai to Lord Yama and tying the Yellow Charadu is at that time. But March 14th is a Monday and there is Yama Khandam between 10.30 to 12 Noon. So some of the Panchangams are of the opinion that it should be observed between 10 Am and 10.30 Am. (there is a well known saying that "Masi Charadu Pasi padarum" meaning that the charadu tied in the Masi month would last for a very long long time.)

It is believed that when Sathi Savithri was Following Yama , there was a stage , when she needed to worship him with an offering. In the forest and mountain through which she was following , she could only make an extremely simple dish .Nowadays Two types of Adais one sweet and another salt are prepared . சாவித்திரி விரதத்தின் சிறப்பை புராணம் விளக்குகிறது. நெடுநாட்கள் பிள்ளைப் பேறு இல்லாமலிருந்த அஸ்வபதி மன்னன், மகப்பேறு வேண்டி தான- தர்மங்கள் செய்து வந்தான். அதன் பயனாக ஒரு பெண் குழந்தை பிறந்தது. சாமுத்திரிகா லட்சணங்கள் அனைத்தும் கொண்டிருந்த அக்குழந்தைக்கு சாவித்திரி என்று பெயரிட்டனர். அவளுக்கு எட்டு வயதாகும்போது அங்கு வந்த நாரதர், அவளது எதிர்காலத்தைப் பற்றி கூறிச் சென்றார். தாய்- தந்தையரை தெய்வமாக மதிக்கும் சத்யவான் என்பவனை அவள் மணந்து கொள்வாள் என்றும்; சத்யவான் 21 ஆண்டுகள் வரைதான் வாழ்வான் என்றும் கூறியிருந்தார்.

சாவித்திரி சத்யவானையே மணந்து, அவனது வாழ்நாள் அதிகரிக்க பல விரதங்களையும் நோன்புகளையும் அனுஷ்டித்தாள். சத்யவானும் சாவித்திரியும் வேற்று நாட்டு அரசனால் நாடு கடத்தப்பட்டு ஒரு கானகத்தில் வசித்து வந்தனர். நாரதர் கூறியிருந்தபடி சத்யவானின் இறுதிநாள் வந்தது. அன்று சாவித்திரி தடுத்தும் கேளாமல் அவன் விறகு சேகரிக்க காட்டுக்குப் புறப்பட்டான். சாவித்திரியும் உடன் சென்றாள். நண்பகல் வேளையில் சத்யவான் சாவித்திரியின் மடியில் தலைவைத்து படுத்திருந்தபோது, எமதர்ம ராஜன் அவன் உயிரைப் பறித்துச் சென்றான். சாவித்திரியின் கற்புத் திறத்தால் எமதர்மனின் உருவம் அவள் கண்களுக்குத் தெரிந்தது. அவள் தன் கணவனின் உடலைக் கீழே கிடத்தி விட்டு, எமனைப் பின்பற்றிச் சென்றாள்.

அவளது காலடி ஓசை கேட்டுத் திரும்பிய எமனின் பாதங்களில் விழுந்து சாவித்திரி வணங்கினாள். அவளை "தீர்க்க சுமங்கலி பவ" என்று எமன் வாழ்த்தினான். சாவித்திரி எமனை வேண்டி பல வரங்களைப் பெற்றாள். அதில் வம்சவிருத்தி அருளும்படி வேண்டிய வரம் எமனைத் திகைக்க வைத்தது. சாதுர்யமாக தன் கணவனின் உயிரை அவள் மீட்டதை அறிந்தான் எமன்.

சாவித்திரியின் பதிபக்தியை மெச்சிய எமன், "இதுவரை என்னை யாரும் பார்த்தது இல்லை. உன் கற்பின் மகிமையால் நீ வெற்றி பெற்று விட்டாய். நீ என்னிடம் கேட்டுப் பெற்ற வரங்கள் அனைத்தும் நிறைவேறும். உலகம் உள்ளளவும், உன்னை நினைத்து மாசியும் பங்குனியும் சேரும் சமயத்தில் விரதமிருப்பவர்களுக்கு உன் ஆசி கிட்டும். அவர்கள் மனமொத்த தம்பதிகளாக வாழ்வார்கள்'' என ஆசி கூறி அனுப்பினான்.

சாவித்திரி காட்டில் கணவனை விட்டுச் சென்ற இடத்திற்குத் திரும்பி வந்து, அவன் உடலைத் தன் மடியில் கிடத்தினாள். சிறிது நேரத்தில் தூக்கத்திலிருந்து விழிப்பதுபோல் சத்யவான் விழித்தெழுந்து, "உன்னைப் போன்ற பெண் ஒருத்தி என்னை மீட்டு வந்ததாகக் கனவு கண்டேன்'' என்று கூறினான். அவன் உயிரை எமன் எடுத்துச் சென்றதையும்; எமனுடன் போராடி அவன் உயிரையும், மேலும் பல வரங்களையும் பெற்று வந்த விவரத்தையும் சாவித்திரி கூறினாள்.

சாவித்திரியும் சத்யவானும் தங்கள் குடிலுக்குத் திரும்பி வந்தனர். சாவித்திரி எமனிடம் பெற்ற வரத்தின்படி சத்யவான் மீண்டும் தன் நாட்டைப் பெற்றான். அவனது பெற்றோர்கள் கண்பார்வை பெற்றனர்.

சாவித்திரி அனுஷ்டித்து வந்த நோன்பு அவளது காலம் வரை கௌரி நோன்பு எனக் கூறப்பட்டது. அதன் பின்னர் சாவித்திரி நோன்பு என்ற பெயர் பெற்றது. சாவித்திரி காட்டில் இருந்து இந்த நோன்பை மேற்கொண்டபோது அங்கு அவளுக்குக் கிடைத்த காராமணி, கார் அரிசி ஆகியவற்றைக் கொண்டு காரடை செய்து நிவேதனம் செய்தாள். அதனால் இந்த நோன்பு நோற்கும் பெண்கள் நிவேதனத்தில் காரடை வைத்து, "உருகாத வெண்ணெயும் ஓரடையும் நான் தருவேன்; ஒருக்காலும் என் கணவர் என்னைப் பிரியாதிருக்க வேண்டும்" என வேண்டி நோன்புக் கயிறு கட்டிக் கொள்வார்கள்.

திருமணமான பெண்கள் தங்கள் மாங்கல்ய பாக்கியம் நிலைக்க, கணவரை நோய் நொடி யின்றி காக்க இந்த நோன்பு கவசமாக இருக்கிறது. இந்த நோன்பை நோற்பதன் பலனாக சாவித்திரி நூறு பிள்ளைகளுடன் சௌபாக்கிய வதியாய் பல்லாண்டு காலம் வாழ்ந்தாள் என்பது புராணம். அவளது சரித்திரத்தை நோன்பு தினத்தில் படிப்பதால் சகல சௌபாக்கியங்களும் பெறலாம்.

One of my friends on the face book ( Meena Krishnan ) wanted me to give the correct time to observe Karadayan Nombu .She wanted to give it early so that the confusion among people (especially among Kerala Brahmins) as to the correct time may be removed. I am only writing what I know but the ultimate authority on this for every family is their family priest and not anyone else .

This is a very important festival observed by Ladies of Tamil Nadu on the day when masi(kumbham) ends and Panguni (meenam ) begins. This pooja is observed to commemorate the day when SAthi Savithri went after Yama the God of death to get back the soul of her husband Sathyavan and is observed by ladies for granting a longer life span to her husband. (or future husband)
This year The Nombu falls on March 14th .Most of the Panchangams on line and those available with me indicate that the new month begins at around 11.18 Am. Some panchangams have suggested that the proper Muhurtha to observe the offering of Adai to Lord Yama and tying the Yellow Charadu is at that time. But March 14th is a Monday and there is Yama Khandam between 10.30 to 12 Noon. So some of the Panchangams are of the opinion that it should be observed between 10 Am and 10.30 Am. (there is a well known saying that "Masi Charadu Pasi padarum" meaning that the charadu tied in the Masi month would last for a very long long time.)
While wearing the Charadu and offering the Adai and butter to the Gods Ladies chant
"Urugaada Vennaiyum Oaradaiyum Naan Tharuven
Orukaalum En Kanavar Ennai Piriyadirukkanum"
"I would offer you butter that has not melted and one Adai,
And so at no time should my husband part from me"

However the month of Panguni begins in different places of the world at different times:-
In United States it is on March 13th night . Australia Time is on March 14 at 3:48 PM. Singapore and Malaysia Time is 1:48 PM on March 14. Karadayan Nonbu is observed at the particular time when the Tamil month Masi ends and Tamil month Panguni begins.
The USA timings are - Panguni Masam begins at 12:48 AM on March 14, 2016 Eastern Standard Time in USA
begins at 11:48 PM on March 13, 2016 Central Standard Time in USA
begins at 9:48 PM on March 13, 2016 Pacific Standard Time in USA
begins at 10:48 PM on March 13, 2016 Mountain Standard Time in USA
Please note that the exact time of Masi (kumbam) ending and Panguni (meenam) starting varies from country to country. So the apt and ideal choice is to consult your temple priest or check with elders or refer your regional Panchangam. The above time is based on Indian calendars and Panchangam.
Unlike India there is no Yama Gandam at any of these places . So the ceremony can be observed at the time when Panguni month begins.If the month begins at night after 11 or 12 PM, the ceremony can be observed around 10 PM

It is believed that when Sathi Savithri was Following Yama , there was a stage , when she needed to worship him with an offering. In the forest and mountain through which she was following , she could only make an extremely simple dish .Nowadays Two types of Adais one sweet and another salt are prepared . மாசியும் பங்குனியும் கூடும் வேளையில் நோற்கப்படுவது காரடையான் நோன்பு. மாசி மாத கடைசி நாள் இரவு ஆரம்பித்து பங்குனி முதல் நாள் காலையில் முடிப்பர். (இவ்வாண்டு 13-3-2016 இரவு முதல் 14-3-2016 காலை வரை). இந்த நோன்பை காமாட்சி நோன்பு, கௌரி விரதம், சாவித்திரி விரதம் என்றும் சொல்வார்கள்.

சாவித்திரி தன் கணவனை எமதர்ம ராஜனிடமிருந்து மீட்டது இந்த நாளில்தான். சுமங்கலிப் பெண்கள் தங்கள் கழுத்தில் மங்கல நாண் நிலைக்கவும்; தங்களது கணவன் நீண்ட ஆயுளோடு வாழ வேண்டும் என்பதற் காகவும் சாவித்திரி அம்மனை வேண்டி இந்த விரதம் இருப் பார்கள்.

விரத பூஜையில் காமாட்சி அம்மனையும், கலசத்தையும் (கலச பூஜை) வழி படுவார்கள்.
அம்மனுக்கு கார் அரிசியும் காராமணியும் கலந்து செய்த அடையும், உருகாத வெண்ணெயும் நிவேதனம் செய்வார்கள். நோன்புச் சரட்டில் மலரைக் கட்டி பூஜையில் வைத்து கழுத்தில் கட்டிக் கொள்வார் கள். "மாசிக்கயிறு பாசி படியும்' என்று, பங்குனி முதல் நாளில் புதிய மங்கலச் சரடை மாற்றிக்கொள்வது விசேஷமானதாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது.

சாவித்திரி விரதத்தின் சிறப்பை புராணம் விளக்குகிறது. நெடுநாட்கள் பிள்ளைப் பேறு இல்லாமலிருந்த அஸ்வபதி மன்னன், மகப்பேறு வேண்டி தான- தர்மங்கள் செய்து வந்தான். அதன் பயனாக ஒரு பெண் குழந்தை பிறந்தது. சாமுத்திரிகா லட்சணங்கள் அனைத்தும் கொண்டிருந்த அக்குழந்தைக்கு சாவித்திரி என்று பெயரிட்டனர். அவளுக்கு எட்டு வயதாகும்போது அங்கு வந்த நாரதர், அவளது எதிர்காலத்தைப் பற்றி கூறிச் சென்றார். தாய்- தந்தையரை தெய்வமாக மதிக்கும் சத்யவான் என்பவனை அவள் மணந்து கொள்வாள் என்றும்; சத்யவான் 21 ஆண்டுகள் வரைதான் வாழ்வான் என்றும் கூறியிருந்தார்.
சாவித்திரி சத்யவானையே மணந்து, அவனது வாழ்நாள் அதிகரிக்க பல விரதங்களையும் நோன்புகளையும் அனுஷ்டித்தாள். சத்யவானும் சாவித்திரியும் வேற்று நாட்டு அரசனால் நாடு கடத்தப்பட்டு ஒரு கானகத்தில் வசித்து வந்தனர். நாரதர் கூறியிருந்தபடி சத்யவானின் இறுதிநாள் வந்தது. அன்று சாவித்திரி தடுத்தும் கேளாமல் அவன் விறகு சேகரிக்க காட்டுக்குப் புறப்பட்டான். சாவித்திரியும் உடன் சென்றாள். நண்பகல் வேளையில் சத்யவான் சாவித்திரியின் மடியில் தலைவைத்து படுத்திருந்தபோது, எமதர்ம ராஜன் அவன் உயிரைப் பறித்துச் சென்றான். சாவித்திரியின் கற்புத் திறத்தால் எமதர்மனின் உருவம் அவள் கண்களுக்குத் தெரிந்தது. அவள் தன் கணவனின் உடலைக் கீழே கிடத்தி விட்டு, எமனைப் பின்பற்றிச் சென்றாள்.

அவளது காலடி ஓசை கேட்டுத் திரும்பிய எமனின் பாதங்களில் விழுந்து சாவித்திரி வணங்கினாள். அவளை "தீர்க்க சுமங்கலி பவ" என்று எமன் வாழ்த்தினான். சாவித்திரி எமனை வேண்டி பல வரங்களைப் பெற்றாள். அதில் வம்சவிருத்தி அருளும்படி வேண்டிய வரம் எமனைத் திகைக்க வைத்தது. சாதுர்யமாக தன் கணவனின் உயிரை அவள் மீட்டதை அறிந்தான் எமன்.

சாவித்திரியின் பதிபக்தியை மெச்சிய எமன், "இதுவரை என்னை யாரும் பார்த்தது இல்லை. உன் கற்பின் மகிமையால் நீ வெற்றி பெற்று விட்டாய். நீ என்னிடம் கேட்டுப் பெற்ற வரங்கள் அனைத்தும் நிறைவேறும். உலகம் உள்ளளவும், உன்னை நினைத்து மாசியும் பங்குனியும் சேரும் சமயத்தில் விரதமிருப்பவர்களுக்கு உன் ஆசி கிட்டும். அவர்கள் மனமொத்த தம்பதிகளாக வாழ்வார்கள்'' என ஆசி கூறி அனுப்பினான்.

சாவித்திரி காட்டில் கணவனை விட்டுச் சென்ற இடத்திற்குத் திரும்பி வந்து, அவன் உடலைத் தன் மடியில் கிடத்தினாள். சிறிது நேரத்தில் தூக்கத்திலிருந்து விழிப்பதுபோல் சத்யவான் விழித்தெழுந்து, "உன்னைப் போன்ற பெண் ஒருத்தி என்னை மீட்டு வந்ததாகக் கனவு கண்டேன்'' என்று கூறினான். அவன் உயிரை எமன் எடுத்துச் சென்றதையும்; எமனுடன் போராடி அவன் உயிரையும், மேலும் பல வரங்களையும் பெற்று வந்த விவரத்தையும் சாவித்திரி கூறினாள்.

சாவித்திரியும் சத்யவானும் தங்கள் குடிலுக்குத் திரும்பி வந்தனர். சாவித்திரி எமனிடம் பெற்ற வரத்தின்படி சத்யவான் மீண்டும் தன் நாட்டைப் பெற்றான். அவனது பெற்றோர்கள் கண்பார்வை பெற்றனர்.

சாவித்திரி அனுஷ்டித்து வந்த நோன்பு அவளது காலம் வரை கௌரி நோன்பு எனக் கூறப்பட்டது. அதன் பின்னர் சாவித்திரி நோன்பு என்ற பெயர் பெற்றது. சாவித்திரி காட்டில் இருந்து இந்த நோன்பை மேற்கொண்டபோது அங்கு அவளுக்குக் கிடைத்த காராமணி, கார் அரிசி ஆகியவற்றைக் கொண்டு காரடை செய்து நிவேதனம் செய்தாள். அதனால் இந்த நோன்பு நோற்கும் பெண்கள் நிவேதனத்தில் காரடை வைத்து, "உருகாத வெண்ணெயும் ஓரடையும் நான் தருவேன்; ஒருக்காலும் என் கணவர் என்னைப் பிரியாதிருக்க வேண்டும்" என வேண்டி நோன்புக் கயிறு கட்டிக் கொள்வார்கள்.
திருமணமான பெண்கள் தங்கள் மாங்கல்ய பாக்கியம் நிலைக்க, கணவரை நோய் நொடி யின்றி காக்க இந்த நோன்பு கவசமாக இருக்கிறது. இந்த நோன்பை நோற்பதன் பலனாக சாவித்திரி நூறு பிள்ளைகளுடன் சௌபாக்கிய வதியாய் பல்லாண்டு காலம் வாழ்ந்தாள் என்பது புராணம். அவளது சரித்திரத்தை நோன்பு தினத்தில் படிப்பதால் சகல சௌபாக்கியங்களும் பெறலாம்.
